One person dead in Slingerlands fire

June 13, 2019 12:59 PM

One person is dead after fire destroyed an apartment building at a complex not too far from Route 85 in Slingerlands on Thursday morning. Investigators say the person is an adult who lived on the second floor, but they won't release the person's gender yet. The body was being taken to Ellis Hospital for an autopsy.

Police and firefighters responded to calls of a fire located at building 26 of the Meadowbrook Apartment complex shortly after 2 a.m. Neighbors say the building was engulfed in flames within 20 minutes.

A big problem was a gas line that fueled the flame for four hours before National Grid could get it turned off.

Red Cross officials say that they are providing aid to about 20 people. They say one building was destroyed by the fire and three others were evacuated.  The Red Cross has set up at the complex's clubhouse to assist residents who have been displaced by the fire.

"At this point, we are working to locate relatives of individuals that resided in the apartments, as well as make contact with some residents who were out of town in the area that reside in this building," said Commander Adam Hornick, with Bethlehem Police Department.

The building is too old to have a sprinkler system, but at least some of the apartments had smoke detectors.

Police and fire crews were planning to remain on the scene throughout the day on Thursday.
