Old sneakers being used for new playground at Guilderland school

GUILDERLAND – Kids and parents at Westmere Elementary school are running with a new fundraising idea that seems to be gaining some traction.

The idea is that instead of tossing your old sneakers and cleats in the garbage, toss them in a (reused, recycled, redecorated) collection box around Guilderland. Each pair is worth $1 toward a new playground structure to replace one for K-2 that’s 30-years old. They are working with gotsneakers.com out of Florida.

"We're all part of this community and working together helps our school here at Westmere so even the smallest part of donating one pair of shoes you've contributed and we thank you for that,” said Dr. Beth Bini, principal at Westmere Elementary.

There are 16 collection boxes in Guilderland and so far, the school has shipped out ten bags of sneakers. They can be found at Macy’s at Crossgates Mall, plus Guilderland Elementary, Farnsworth Middle and Guilderland High School, Guilderland Town Hall, Pil Sung Taekwondo, Guilderland Martial Arts, Tendercare Child Center, M&T Bank on Western Avenue, Pine Grove Methodist, Guilderland YMCA, Guilderland Library, Guilderland Vent Fitness, Tina Marie’s Dance Academy and Price Chopper in Slingerlands.
