Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging Upstate New Yorkers to avoid any unnecessary travel, to keep a close eye on the weather, and abide by any emergency orders that may be issued.

If you have to head out the door during the storm, here are some safe travel tips:

Before getting behind the wheel, make sure your car is clear of ice and snow. Good vision is key to good driving.

Keep more distance between vehicles.

If you have a cell phone, make sure the battery is charged and keep it with you whenever traveling. It's a good idea to also have a portable battery pack. If you do become stranded, you will be able to call for help, advising rescuers of your location.

Make sure someone knows your travel plans.
