MECHANICVILLE – Some classrooms around the Capital Region have been holding special events this week leading up to the Super Bowl. That includes the Mechanicville Elementary "Soup"-er Bowl.

The goal is simple – the most cans wins. Kindergarten teacher Pam Connelly began the competition a decade ago where kids bring in cans of soup to support their favorite team: Philadelphia or New England.

Many teachers incorporate math lessons with the “can”-raiser.

Overall, they collected 1,942 cans. Unlike last year’s final game, the "New England Clam Chowders" did not come back from a big mid-week deficit. The "Cheese-Steaks" won easily with 1,426 cans to 516.

The cans of soup will go to the local food pantry run by the Mechanicville Community Center.

The actual game, Super Bowl LII between the Eagles and defending champion Patriots, is on NewsChannel-13 and NBC at 6:30 p.m.
