South Troy Pool to stay closed for rest of summer

It's the homestretch of summer and now NewsChannel 13 has learned the shuttered South Troy Pool will stay closed this summer.
Mayor Patrick Madden released a statement on Friday morning. He says due to labor shortages, they were unable to secure a qualified contractor to complete the concrete pool deck to be able to reopen this summer.
He also blames uncooperative weather conditions, including spring and summer rainfall for the delay.
In July, the Boys & Girls Club opened their pool to city residents.
The pool has been closed for two years.
Mayor Madden added, what began as a short-term repair became a complete renovation of the facility.
He hopes to complete the pool deck repairs this summer with opening day next year.
You can read Mayor Madden's full statement below:
“After many months of tireless work to renovate the South End Pool, and in consultation with City staff, we are saddened to announce the facility will be unable to reopen this summer. Despite the enormous efforts of our Engineering Department staff and crews, due to labor shortages we have been unable to secure a qualified contractor to complete the concrete pool deck in order to make an opening possible this summer.
“From the beginning, we outlined the ambitious timeline to repair the nearly 60 year-old swimming facility. After decades of neglect, we took steps to address the dangerous conditions at the pool, closing them to protect the health and safety of children and families who use it. After two years of diligent focus to restore our City’s finances we secured the necessary funding to undertake repairs, including critical support from Assemblyman John McDonald.
“Early work revealed long-hidden structural issues with the concrete pool walls and decking. This required changes in the scope of work and materials, including the removal of significant portions of the pool interior wall. This major change, coupled with uncooperative weather conditions and a record spring and summer rainfall, caused the projected timeframe to be extended.
“However, what began as a short-term repair became a complete renovation of the swimming facility, extending the useful life of the pool for another 15 years with proper maintenance.
“This included installation of a gutter and liner system, a completely rebuilt water filtration and chemical treatment system, new changing rooms, rebuilt bathrooms, skylights, new electrical lines and energy efficient lighting, new plumbing, a new roof for the facilities building, and the addition of a pool lift to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
“We extend our thanks to the Troy Boys and Girls Clubs of the Capital Area for their partnership and cooperation this year. With financial assistance from the City, we secured access to the Troy Clubhouse’s indoor swimming facility, providing critically important swimming opportunities for children and teens in Troy. This partnership was, and remains, a testament to our joint commitment to enrich the lives of young people in our community.
“Additionally, we also thank the Rensselaer County Board of Health for their assistance and professionalism as we progressed forward with this project.
“We eagerly look forward to completing the pool deck repairs later this summer so that we can ensure a complete facility with opening day 2020.”
