Troy residents hope pool will be ready before summer ends

TROY - The South Troy pool is still closed as the city continues making repairs. So, will it open this summer? The city maintains it's making progress and hopes to open in the coming weeks.

This is a story NewsChannel 13 has been following since December of 2016 when budget cuts threatened to shut the Troy pools. The following summer, those threats became a reality and the two pools were closed. The city needed $2.4 million to fix them. When that didn't happen, the pools remained closed last summer.

"Likely in the past, there may have been things that might not have been completed in a timely fashion, hence why we have to replace all the plumbing, why we have to replace the new gutter, why we had to put a brand new roof on the facilities building," said John Salka, the Troy city spokesman.

What happened in the past is literally water under the ground and through the cracks of the South Troy swimming pool, which has been a popular antidote to sweltering summers in the Collar City for generations.

"We estimated the pool, I believe was early 60s when this pool was actually constructed," said Todd Dickinson, the Troy city engineer.

Dickinson says despite its age, cosmetic fixes to the concrete shell have already bolstered the pool's strength, however a total repair of the entire facility is much more complex.

"I think it came to a point where the pump started to really fail, and once they fail, your circulation, your returns, your filtration, all of that decreases," he said.

That, he says, doesn't include the unforeseen problems that inevitably come up.

"It's a very complex process. Things have to be done in sequential order. So, it's not simply putting a liner in the pool and filling it up with water," said Salka.

Also involved in the project, a new chlorination and filtration system, a new pool deck with steel gutters and stainless steel railings, not to mention totally rebuilt dressing rooms and shower facilities. Plenty of accommodations, but really only one question – when will families be able to bring their kids to splash in the cool water?

"I can't give you a definitive date," said Dickinson.

He says he'd love to see the pool open by August 1. Whenever it opens - from the perspective of residents, the day can't some soon enough.
