Troy opens splash pads to help residents cool off on the 4th

July 04, 2019 07:24 PM

TROY - Repairs are still being made to the South Troy pool, and the Boys & Girls Club Pool, which has filled the gap for the community on nights and weekends, is closed for the 4th of July.

The city is offering other options instead. That includes splash pads at Corliss Park, Frear Park, Knickerbacker Park, and Prospect Park through sunset - and Riverfront Park until 8 p.m.

There are also four cooling station locations throughout the city open until 8 p.m. on Thursday at 120th Street Park on 1st Avenue, Little Italy Market Place on 5th Avenue, 7th Avenue Park, and Canal Street Park.

The South Troy Pool was supposed to open this past Monday, but that was ultimately delayed because all the repairs aren't finished.

The city sent out a notice on Wednesday saying they uncovered more issues in the 60-year-old pool walls when they removed the paint from them.  Parts of the walls have been removed to install a gutter system and pool liner. City officials say record spring rainfall and issues with getting the custom made parts for the renovations extended the project timeline.

Crews have already completed gutting the changing rooms, re-wiring electrical lines and plumbing work for the bathrooms and showers.

Though there have been delays, city officials say they're actually happy they discovered these other issues now while they're making repairs, because it will ultimately be a better investment that will benefit the public longer.
