Police: Husband stabs wife at Colonie hair salon

August 31, 2018 05:45 PM

COLONIE – Early Friday morning, the Beauty & Bliss Spa on Central Ave. was put back together. Chairs were back in place, cabinets were closed and everything was as it should be. It didn't look at all like the mess that was left inside after the police investigation from Thursday evening.

Under arrest is 51-year-old Thomas Caulfield, who is charged with attempted murder of his estranged wife, a 49-year old woman. She remains in critical condition at Albany Medical Center.

He was treated in the emergency room and released at 3:30 a.m. and booked by Colonie Police then arraigned and sent to the Albany County Correctional Facility.  He is charged with attempted murder (felony), aggravated criminal contempt (felony), criminal possession of a weapon (misdemeanor - 2 counts). The criminal contempt charge stems from the victim having a valid order of protection against the defendant and the criminal possession of a weapon charges stem from the defendant possessing a 5" Santoku knife used in the stabbing and also metal knuckles during the attack.

He and his wife once lived in Niskayuna and have two adult children. However, since mid-June, they have been at odds and apart. Police credit two passersby who were flagged down by customers at the spa for stopping the attack.

"All credit in the world to them, very commendable," said Lt. Robert Winn. "They stopped and took action immediately and I believe, and everyone who was there believes that if they did not take action that she would have sustained more serious injuries or possibly even death."

A statement from the victim's attorney, Laura Hoffman: "This case had overtones of domestic violence and my office was taking all appropriate legal remedies to protect her. Unfortunately, there are only so many judicial remedies available to prevent horrifying acts such as this. I am hopeful she will make a full recovery and that she will feel reassured knowing her husband will not be getting out of jail for an extended period of time."

Caulfield is in the Albany County Jail without bail. He is due back in court on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
