Staff Sergeant from Stillwater dies in Antarctica

A member of the 109th Airlift Wing in Scotia has died in Antarctica.

According to his obituary, SSgt. George Girtler IV died of a pulmonary embolism January 11 while deployed for Operation Deep Freeze. He was 37 years old.


Girtler was a 2001 graduate of Stillwater High, and a graduate of HVCC, and DeVry University.

He joined the US Air Force Reserves and Air National Guard in 2010 and was serving as an Aircraft Electrical and Environmental specialist at McMurdo with the 139th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron. 

He leaves behind a wife and kids – along with many other family members.
