ALBANY - The state Senate held a hearing on Wednesday on the welfare of race horses.
Lawmakers say horse racing is an important part of New York's economy, but we also have a responsibility to make sure the animals are being well cared for.
They also discussed ways to limit the number of horses injured and killed at race tracks in New York state.
Thoroughbred safety has been brought to the forefront this year, after more than two-dozen horses died at Santa Anita Race Course in California.
