Swimmer's Itch causing problems at area lakes

June 20, 2018 10:26 PM

A day at the beach turns into days of discomfort. Nine year old Anna Mann celebrated her birthday at Moreau Lake State Park this past weekend. She went home with a bad case of swimmer's itch.

"She showered as soon as she got out, changed and rinsed right off and it just, she woke up in the morning and she was covered from head to toe," said Stephanie Smith, Anna's mom.

After three days of Benadryl and prednisone Anna is feeling a little better. Her mother still has concerns.

"Something is going on here. It's not one, it's not an isolated one person case," said Smith.

Smith says three other children in her group came down with symptoms, too. State Parks say they are aware of two families that had multiple people present symptoms.

Smith posted photos of her daughter's rash on Facebook and the comments came pouring in. Two parents who had children in Lake George this weekend also say their kids broke out after swimming.

"He did have a couple spots that looked like bug bites but then it was more hivey, welted like areas," said Heather Baker.

Baker's son Jayden had a rash that just kept getting worse.

"Literally it just kept spreading to different parts of his body so we just kept up with the Benadryl and calamine lotion," said Baker.

Pediatricians say most people with swimmer's itch do not need to see a doctor. They recommend taking a medication with an antihistamine and bathing in baking soda, oatmeal, or Epsom salts to relieve the itch.

State Parks say the water is safe for swimming and the beaches will remain open.

"I have an Empire Pass. I bought it to enjoy the parks for the summer. It's not gonna stop us from coming here but we want to know if they're gonna do something about this," said Smith.

State Parks say they will be handing out informational fliers about swimmer's itch and the parasites at Moreau Lake.
