How comfortable would you be swimming in the Mohawk River? A comprehensive analysis of river contaminates might help you decide if you're ready to jump in the water.
Whether you want to swim in the Mohawk or not, you don't want to do it right now.
According to one of the many scientists who's been monitoring the Mohawk, the vast majority of the river from Utica to Cohoes Falls is very swimmable, but there are a couple spots in the Capital Region you want to avoid.
For the past four years, the environmental watchdog group Riverkeeper, along with SUNY scientists, have been gathering surface water at various spots along a 140 mile stretch of river.
They've been analyzing those water samples to find levels of fecal bacteria and then determine if it's safe for swimmers to go in the water.
The bottom line: go ahead. Jump in. Enjoy yourself. However, don't jump in anywhere near Cohoes or Waterford.
