COLONIE - The Costumer is a Trick-or-Treat tradition that big kids don't grow out of once October rolls around.

"Every year, right on Halloween, I come here and find my costume," said Anthony Snyder of Colonie.

And this year, even with brand new owners, The Costumer's scary season has been a busy one.

"The last days have been crazy. It's been tons of fun," explained The Costumer owner Bonnie Johnsen.

Come November 1, sales at The Costumer don't stop.  Most of the store's business comes from theater costume rentals.  The warehouse in Schenectady - separate from the store front on Central Avenue in Colonie - has 100,000 stage quality ensembles.

"We are here year round.  Halloween is just a blip for us.  Theater, dance wear, rentals, that's where everything comes into play for us too," says Johnsen.

In its 100-year history, four families have owned The Costumer.  But it's the workers that have helped the store to prosper despite growing competition from online and big box shops.

"We have such a dedicated, motivated and fantastic staff that absolutely love what they do," noted Johnsen.

A visit to The Costumer is most definitely, an experience - one the owners hope will be around for another 100 years.

"You're providing entertainment and providing fun.  What's not to love about that," added Johnson.

A seamstress was the original Costumer owner.  She opened the store after she earned success sewing costumes in exchange for her daughter's dance lessons.
