Fallen trooper remembered as a family man

November 28, 2018 07:20 PM

FULTONVILLE -- Michael's Diner on Main Street in Fultonville is not far from the state police Fonda barracks, and the owner is proud to serve troopers, who are regulars there.

"So you get to become very attached to them as family," said diner owner Michael Grandy.  "Because you get to know what they want, what they like to eat.  Find out about their families, what they like to do in their spare time and he always talked about his family."

News of the trooper's death came as a shock and today, there's a message on the board:  "RIP Trooper Jeremy V.  Miss you buddy."

"They were all in this morning, they seen it.  They appreciated it, and it was hard seeing them out today," said Grandy.

Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand was killed Tuesday on his way to work. He was waiting on Route 5S to turn into his Fonda barracks, when police say he was rear-ended by a box truck and pushed into on-coming traffic, where he was hit by a pickup truck.

People lined up to honor him as his body left Albany Medical Center.

Police said Tuesday they do not believe that weather was a factor in the crash.

"We don't know what caused this accident yet.  Was it speed, was it driver inattention, was it a vehicle malfunction, we don't know," said New York State Police Captain Robert Patnaude.

Trooper Van Nostrand was 36 years old.  He leaves behind a wife and a young daughter. He had been with the state police for six years. Before that, he was a state correction officer. He earned a master's degree at Saint Rose in 2010.

State police said Wednesday that there have been no tickets issued, and no arrests in connection with the crash.

"Every day they get up, they go to work, they leave their family.  you never know what's going to happen throughout the day," said Grandy.
