Troy city pools sit empty for another summer

TROY - Staying cool is going to be a challenge once again for people in Troy. That's because for another summer, they will not have access to a city pool.

NewsChannel 13 spoke with several people at a few different spray pools around the city. Not surprisingly, people are disappointed that they still aren't able to use either the Knickerbacker Pool or the one in South Troy.

City officials say spending almost $2.5 million to get a few more years out of each pool isn't fiscally sound.

Last year, an engineering company found issues with the pool decks, underground piping, pool gutters, stair railings, shell corrosion issues and even problems with parts of the locker rooms when they did an assessment. They estimated demolishing and putting in new pools would cost $3.8 million each. City officials say there was a failure to invest and plan for repairs and upkeep of the pools.

Officials in Troy's public information office say they are in the process of trying to get a master plan together for the city's parks, pools and other places people recreate. They say they're applying for state grants to get started on that master plan.

Many at the spray pools say the pools are a necessity. Without them, many kids are going to get too hot, become angry and may even do things they wouldn't normally do.

Some are even going well out of their way to get some relief from the heat.

"Sometimes, I have to make it all the way to Saratoga. [Sunday], we went to Saratoga pool because that was the only pool open. So it's unfortunate that my kids can't have a pool that we can daily go to. Unfortunately, my backyard, I can't have my own pool," explained Amelia Ruiz of Lansingburgh.

In the meantime, there are free camps through Lansingburgh and Troy Boys & Girls Clubs and the YMCA being offered this summer. Kids can take swimming lessons, fishing lessons and do other summer activities through these programs.
