TROY - DeFazio's is ready to expand.
The family bought the former Vanilla Bean building from the city three years ago.
Matt DeFazio gave NewsChannel 13 a quick tour of the new building.
"It is huge," he said. "And that's why this project took a little bit longer than we had anticipated, but now we're so comfortable with what we're going to do here."
Plans for the new space include an import store, a full bar, a gelateria, and two dining rooms -- one, a little more formal.
"Separating you from the open dining room with the pasta bar, a pizza bar, where you can sit and watch your food being made right there," DeFazio explained.
The current DeFazio's, which is a block away, has been serving up pizza and homemade pasta for decades, and now offers options like vegan and whole grain to adapt to their customers.
Right next door sits the longtime family import store, which began in 1951.
Recently, they began selling homemade gelato.
Recipes have been passed down four, even five generations.
DeFazio says the new business will create more than 30 positions.
"We're very excited to offer more jobs. We love this community, we didn't want to move to a different part of the Capital Region. We wanted to expand right here in Troy," he said.
As first reported by the Albany Business Review, the Troy IDA just approved the tax PILOT program.
They're planning to start construction on the new space this summer, maybe late July. However, their plans don't end there. Phase 2 of the project will be to turn the building next door into a 100-person banquet room.
