TROY - Mike Nash remembers what it was like when he was fighting cancer.

"They say keep a positive attitude. It's kind of hard to do that when they're knocking on your door," he said.

Rebecca Weiss of Troy hosted an event to help.

"I was going through a hard time as far as paying bills and stuff. She stepped in," said Nash. "Put the fundraiser together. We raised quite a bit of money and I got back on my feet again. She's done that for a lot of people."

Some of Rebecca's efforts include the annual Troy Witches Walk pub crawl for Nick's Fight to be Healed, which supports pediatric cancer patients.

When 7-year-old Christian was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2013, his aunt Rebecca swung into action, putting together a fundraiser.

His mother, Luanne Rasmussen, says at first, they were reluctant to accept help, but it ended up being a Godsend when her husband lost his job and insurance, just as Christian started treatment.

"And then once my husband lost his job, we ended up having to use it to pay the mortgage and NiMo and that sort of thing," she said. "It really helped us out because without it we probably would have lost our house."

However, Rebecca Weiss is now facing her own fight. She was just diagnosed with CML, a type of blood cancer.

"Right away, I said we've got to do something for her," said Nash. "Everybody I've talked to or they've contacted me - said what are we going to do for her?  She's always helping everybody else out."

Rasmussen set up a GoFundMe. She and Nash are working on a fundraiser at Hilltop Bowl in Troy.

They know all too well that cancer is expensive.

"Knowing first-hand from what we went through that you just never know what life is going to throw at you," said Rasmussen. "And if it's something you can't use, you can pay it forward, which I know she absolutely will. But if you can use it, it's there."
