New Vietnamese restaurant opening in Troy

February 06, 2019 06:13 PM

TROY -- The steam is rising from the kitchen and the counters are busy for the soft opening of Quang's Vietnamese Bistro in Troy. They're serving customers ahead of next week's official opening.

Owner Quang Tran, who was a waiter at Peck's Arcade in Troy, thought there needed to be a local Vietnamese restaurant.

"The first thing Vietnamese people do when they move somewhere is they ask where is the best place to get Pho?" he said.  "I've been driving to Albany and Clifton Park and I kind of got tired of the drive. And just in the back of my mind, I thought man, if someone opened up a Vietnamese restaurant in this area, they'd be so successful."

Quang's Bistro is in the back of Asian store Kim's Convenience on Third Street.  As you walk in, you can find all kinds of specialty items and Asian groceries, and then go to the back for a bite to eat.

The store's owner is Jinah Kim, who also owns Sunhee's Kitchen, a popular Korean restaurant in Troy.

If you walk around the city, you can find a wide variety of Asian restaurants.

"We really see this rise of Asian cuisine all across the board, with every option now available to people living here, and you can find up to 13 different Asian restaurants just in the downtown Troy historic district," said Kim.

"We've started branding ourselves as 'Troyasia' because of this volume and influx of Asian influence and so every year for the past three years we've been hosting something called the "Troy Asian Night Market," where we invite different vendors," she continued.  "It's an Asian street festival.  People flood the streets. We started with a small Korean barbecue with 50 people.  It's grown to hundreds and maybe even up to a thousand."

Quang's Bistro is the newest addition to Troy's Asian eateries.

Tran has some suggestions if you're new to Vietnamese cuisine.

"I would definitely say the shrimp spring rolls, that's the staple I grew up with as a child, that's like my comfort food," he said.  "And then definitely try the beef pho, which is like the national dish for Vietnam."

Quang's Bistro will officially open Wednesday, February 13.  The hours will be Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., and Wednesday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
