'Unbuttoning' the idea behind a website based in Troy

TROY – They met in 6th grade on the Shenendehowa campus. Now, after college where they studied media and marketing on two different campuses, they are collaborating on Two Buttons Deep, a website they run out of the Troy Innovation Garage.

"With our backgrounds and the opportunity that we saw in Troy we were like, this makes so much sense to stay here, build something for ourselves," said Taylor Rao. "We never really wanted to work for anybody."

"Two Buttons Deep was a Hawaiian shirt party in college. You went 'buttons deep' so all the guys would show up in their Hawaiian shirts much to my dismay as the fashionista of the squad back then and now. But it kind of turned into a little bit of a movement. And we felt like that was a good name for a blog and it kind of caught on…the more buttons deep you go the more open you are."

Rao graduated from Ithaca College; Carpenter won a College Emmy for his "Lake Show" at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. He interned for Conan O'Brien and has appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon."

"So what does it mean to be Two Buttons Deep?" Carpenter asks rhetorically.  "We're going to take it back: When you're zero buttons deep, it's the least fun time of your day…When you're one button deep, you're a little bit looser, maybe driving home or whatever. When you're two buttons deep, whatever time of the day you look forward to the most, happy hour, dinner with your family, wherever you're really in your element and having good conversation, that's being Two Buttons Deep. And everything that we post on our website is stuff we think people will want to talk about when they're Two Buttons Deep with their friends."

They say anything beyond two buttons deep is best left off the internet.

"We're both trained, it's just the way that we've adapted our style to that quick-form content to see something that a 20-something in the Capital Region wants to consume," said Rao.
