ALBANY - Sunday marked the 228th birthday of the United States Coast Guard aboard the USS Slater.

The coast guard is one of the country's five armed services and was originally known as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service.

A ceremony kicked the celebrations off Sunday morning. The USS Slater is the perfect place to celebrate the milestone because during World War Two, the Coast Guard manned hundreds of navy and army vessels, organizers said.

"It was formed seven years before the Navy was and it was at one time, our basically only source of national defense as the Revenue Marine Service,” former Petty Officer 1st Class Coast Guard Richard Walker said.

The USS Slater began honoring the Coast Guard's anniversary back in 2008.
