Partial building collapse leads to state of emergency in Whitehall

WHITEHALL - The Village of Whitehall is under a state of emergency after a building on Main Street partially collapsed Sunday.

It's known as the Flat Iron Building. No injuries were reported and the building was demolished Sunday evening.

The building has been stuck in ownership limbo for more than a year after its owner died.

Village of Whitehall Mayor Phil Smith will re-evaluate the state of emergency on Monday as cleanup continues.

National Grid is working to restore power to the area that was shut off to allow the safe demolition of the building.

Residents in the area have returned home and all roadways have been re-opened.
