NISKAYUNA – Niskayuna Police are searching for a suspect after a woman was shot and killed on Memorial Day at the Hillcrest Village Apartments. She has been identified as 21-year-old Ayanna Hunter. She is a former NewsChannel 13 All-Star basketball player.

Niskayuna Police Chief Dan McManus said the department received a call for shots fired around 8:30 Monday night. He said around six to eight shots were fired, but only Hunter was injured. He said she was taken to Ellis Hospital where she died from her injuries. He did not say where she was shot.

"It's my understanding there's a pavilion down the street, there was an outside gathering, so there was several people outside when it occurred," said Chief McManus. "We don't know at this point how many people might have been involved."

Monday night police were canvasing the area and speaking with witnesses. The Schenectady County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police were assisting at the scene. NYSP also had a helicopter flying around as part of procedure.

McManus said they are looking into whether the shooter and the victim knew each other. He said he doesn't believe Hunter lived at the complex but couldn't confirm. McManus also said he was unsure if Hunter was at the gathering at the pavilion or just the complex.

As of Monday night, Niskayuna Police are still searching for a suspect or suspects.
