Albany County comptroller questions scheduling of school referendum votes

October 04, 2018 06:02 PM

Albany County Comptroller Mike Conners wants to know why school districts don't schedule referendum votes simultaneously with other elections.

For example, on Tuesday, October 16, Guilderland School District residents will vote on a $42.7 million Capital Construction Project.

Conners says it should have been scheduled for November 6 - the date of the general election. He claims not coordinating the dates is un-American and a willful attempt by districts to manipulate the results.

Guilderland Schools issued a response Thursday, saying the Board of Elections can't hold two elections at once because it would create confusion.

However, when NewsChannel 13 spoke to elections personnel on Thursday, they told us it can be done. It would just require passage of a legal measure granting the opportunity.

Conners says he's proposing such legislation to state lawmakers.
