Emergency dispatchers are calling on the state to recognize them as first responders.
The state and federal government currently classify dispatchers as clerical workers. However, those who work the job say they aren't clerks, and that it's a very serious job.
A bill in the New York State Legislature looks to reclassify dispatchers. It would be the first step toward bringing their retirement in line with first responders.
Many say the change is long overdue.
