January 13, 2019 08:20 AM

"It's incredible, to be able to be sworn in, back in the district with the community. To be able to share this moment with family back here at home was great" said Congressman Antonio Delgado.

Saturday marked the start of a new chapter in the 19th congressional district when Congressman Antonio Delgado was sworn in at a ceremony in Hudson, NY. Standing by his side were his wife, two children and a room full of smiling constituents.

"When you come from a working class background or when you come from a community that has historically been marginalized, you bring a certain perspective to bare that hasn't been the case in D.C." said Delgado.

The newly elected congressman is a Schenectady native, rhodes scholar and an attorney.
Delgado, a democrat, won the  election against the incumbent, first term republican John Faso.
Many saying his forward thinking helped him win the race.

"It's that ability to think outside the box, that ability to connect to people, it's what's going to drive the momentum, and hopefully drive the conversation as you push for steps in the right direction" said Delgado.

His race to congress was highly publicized, his campaign platform included climate change and affordable health care, but now Delgado says his first priority is getting the government back up and running.

"I alone am not going to get it done but together on a bi-partisan way, cooperatively, lead with my principles, I think that we can do it" said Delgado.
