We're now less than three weeks away from Primary Day in New York's 19th Congressional District, where seven candidates are vying for the Democratic line. Each of them is hoping to unseat Republican John Faso in the November election. It's a huge district- from north of New York City - to just south of Albany.

Dave Clegg, 65, graduated from SUNY New Paltz and went to law school in Buffalo. After his schooling, he spent a short stint representing Native Americans in Nebraska and South Dakota before returning to the Hudson Valley in the 1980s to raise his family.

Clegg sites his work as a trial lawyer and going head to head against -- what he calls – "corporate interests," among the reasons why he's well-suited for office.

"I've been fighting against that and I think that experience and winning against powerful interests like big corporations is the kind of experience you need to go to Congress with, because those voices are being heard above the voices of our constituents," explained Clegg.

He wants to fight for Medicare for all and believes in public assistance programs like SNAP.

"We have to protect the environment, but we also need to invest in people. We need to invest in education and job training," he noted.

An ordained deacon for the United Methodist Church, Clegg has served on the Ulster County Human Rights Commission, as well as the Board of Health.

He believes his experiences have well prepared him to serve constituents in Congress.

"The reason is that I've been here for 37 years -- not only been here, but I've been doing really concentrated work in the community, making our community a better place to live," pointed out Clegg.

NewsChannel 13 will continue to profile the candidates as we close in on Primary Day - June 26.
