Ex-Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver sentenced to 7 years in prison

Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, once Albany's most powerful Democrat, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

A jury again found him guilty this spring of earning nearly $4 million illegally by collecting fees from a cancer researcher and real estate developers.

The judge told the 74-year-old Democrat that corruption is a crime that attacks the heart of our system of government.

He must surrender on Oct. 1.
