Northway's Exit 3 expected to open by end of 2019

COLONIE - Improvements at Albany International Airport are in high gear and the governor gave an update on its progress on Tuesday.

Construction has been going on since the spring on the side of the Northway in Albany County. After decades, an exit to the airport is being built.

The state is trying to modernize the airport and make "getting there" a bit easier.

It was last August when the state announced the $92 million project with an estimated finish date of March 2020. Now, they're saying they are ahead of schedule and under budget. They expect the highway ramp and construction to be completed by the end of this year.

Perhaps the most anticipated part of the renovations is the new ramp and flyover as travelers make their way from the Northway to the airport.

NewsChannel 13 has been following construction progress since the very beginning. This is a project that had been talked about by previous administrations, but never seemed to come together. Governor Cuomo said his administration has made improving transportation and infrastructure across the state and here in the Capital Region a top priority.

Governor Cuomo put a strong emphasis on Tuesday on the fact it took 50 years for this new ramp to become a reality and says he understand people's hesitancy to put their faith in government to get anything done.

You can hear the governor expand on that point by watching Jacquie Slater's story.
