New Saratoga Springs ICE arrests have activists worried

June 22, 2018 06:09 PM

Immigration officials confirm two arrests in Saratoga Springs this week. Local activists are worried it could be the start of something bigger.

Last year, 36 immigrants were arrested between June and November. They were all men from Mexico and Guatemala. Many were working in restaurants and on farms with expired visas.

Activists say their loss left many businesses struggling to keep up with the demands of a busy tourist and track season.

"They know that they're facing great challenges when they come to this country and the fact that they're willing to take that risk and come to this country, even though they realize that this is a country that doesn't have a welcoming climate at the moment shows the kind of desperation that they feel in order to come here," pointed out Terry Diggory with the Saratoga Immigration Coalition.

ICE says these latest arrests were for administrative immigration violations.
