Socialist Workers Party candidate announces run for mayor in Troy

A challenge announced for Troy Mayor Patrick Madden from a candidate running on the Socialist Workers Party line.

Samantha Hamlin, 33, made the announcement at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Troy City Hall.

She currently works as a Walmart cashier.

She says her priorities are creating more affordable housing, addressing unemployment, and taking on police brutality.

Her candidacy follows a growing trend across the country to have candidates embrace Democratic socialism.

Madden has announced he will seek a second term.
