SARATOGA SPRINGS - When Four Winds Saratoga began providing mental health treatment for kids and adults in 1986, videoconferencing wasn't an option.

The hospital provides both inpatient and outpatient services, and these days they're fulfilling many of those services through an online platform.

The hospital is able to conduct individual and group therapy sessions through a face-to-face portal known as Doximity.

A Four Winds provider based in Saratoga Springs, or at the Four Winds hospital in Westchester County, meets face-to-face with patients anywhere in the world.

Frederick Jones, a licensed mental health counselor and program director at Four Winds, says virtual group therapy is effective because patients still get the valuable connection with one another, even if it's via their computer screen.

"Eventually, the patients were able to see each other and connect with each other and that's what makes group therapy so powerful, to be able to offer this on a virtual platform, I think is really important."

Dr. Brett Nelson, medical director of Four Winds Saratoga's outpatient services, says computer screens sometimes offer insights that can't be picked up during an in-person session.

"I can gain a lot more insight into what one of my patients is going through just by having a little window into their world. I can see how they interact with their family more. I can see a little bit more nuance than I would have ever been able to get when they're here in person," said Nelson.

Four Winds Saratoga remains fully functional during the pandemic and encourages people who feel they need help, to reach out. Their toll-free number is 1-800-959-1287.
