There is a new push to have the Confederate flag banned from school grounds in the Shenendehowa School District.

Students joined several local activist groups outside Gowana Middle School ahead of the Board of Education meeting.

Samira Sangare, a 2016 Shen graduate, says when she was in school, she often saw students flying the flag or wearing it on their clothing.

“I mean this is something so simple that we are asking,” Sangre said. “Banning the Confederate flag, so that my people and my BIPOC and LGBTQ brothers and sisters don’t have to go in the school, after the summer they had, and see a Confederate flag while walking in the hallways switching classes.”

Students say they are just looking to create a safe space for all students - and want their voices to be heard.
