The Arena Football League is shutting down. With it, the Albany Empire arena football team.

The league announced on Wednesday it is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and fully ceasing operations.

Financial constraints, including a recent multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against the league by an insurance carrier, helped lead to its demise.

The league's future seemed all but certain last month when all business operations were suspended.

The Albany Empire led the AFL in attendance with more than 10,000 fans per game.

The Empire spent two seasons in Albany.
