COLONIE – While a herd of bison on the run terrorize some farmers and families in some fields in the Capital Region, another herd is onto greener pastures from Colonie to Branson, Mo. That herd is the Bison Blue 12-and-under team playing in the Cal Ripken World Series from August 1-11.

"It's been a good season but we haven't been playing our best these past few games," said Ethan McGarry, 12, a pitcher and first baseman.

Named for Hall of Famer Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles, known as the "Ironman" for his consecutive games played streak, it's a division of the established Babe Ruth League that has more than one-million players in all 50 states and nearly a dozen countries.

The difference between the Cal Ripken league and Little League baseball primarily are field dimensions.

"They have opportunities I could have never dreamed of when I was 12-years old," said Kevin McGarry, president of North Colonie Travel Baseball for ages 7-12. "So I'm hopeful and I'm sure they will look back on this and say wow we had the time of our lives back then."

They had a send-off at the Albany International Airport Wednesday from Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Town Supervisor Paula Mahan. "American Idol" finalist and Shaker High star Madison VanDenburg serenaded them with "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

"This is going to be the best experience of your life," said McCoy.

"It's about doing your best, having fun and these memories will stay with you forever," said Mahan.

Peter Strand, a physical education teacher from Watervliet, showed up to the event.

"You have an opportunity to play somewhere and travel and most of all make a memory," he said. "I remember 1996 Watervliet won the football state championship and to those guys who are grown men now the memories that we have it lasts forever…I think the support from the community is important too."
