Special Olympics underway at Siena College

LOUDONVILLE - The Special Olympics are underway at Siena College this weekend.

More than 1,500 athletes will be going for the gold. The athletes have been training all year for the games, with competitions at local and regional levels.

They are competing in eight sports. Coaches say the weekend is about the athletes growing both physically and personally.

“People may not realize the amount of work athletes put in here,” said basketball coach Carol Lupo. “They grow so much not only in their skill of basketball, but particularly in their friendships and abilities to work with others.”

Closing ceremonies are Sunday. People are encouraged to turn out for the festivities.
