Drones offer safe alternative to fireworks

(NBC News) Drone shows are becoming a popular form of entertainment for large crowds, and are a safer alternative to traditional fireworks, which killed eight people and injured almost 13,000 in 2017.

Drone light shows also alleviate the risk for wildfires, noise and pollution.

"It's something that's green. We can reuse the same drones from the Olympics from Fountains of Bellagio to July 4 shows," says Natalie Cheung, Intel's general manager of drone light shows.

This year, Intel is partnering with Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California to put on a drone light show in lieu of a fireworks display.

The company has programmed 500 of its Shooting Star drones to move in 3D animations, with each drone featuring build-in LED lights that can create more than four billion color combinations.
