TROY - Hundreds of students are getting ready to take part in a unique competition at RPI this weekend.

Teams from around the world are gathered in Troy for the fifth annual FIRST Robotics competition. The competition combines sports with science, technology, engineering, and math. The teams are challenged to build robots that can perform tasks. But its about more than just robots.

"It's not just about the robot,” said Paul Schoch of the NY Tech Valley Planning Committee. “You gotta keep that in mind. The top award is called the Chairman's Award. It's about what the team does to talk about the STEM opportunities and STEM education.”

The winners this weekend will go on to the international championships in April.
