War medal found in stolen car by Rensselaer police returned to family of deceased vet

Several medals, including the Purple Heart Medal, were returned to the family of Averill Williams Jr.

Williams died serving in the Korean War in 1950.

About a month ago, the Rensselaer Police Department located a stolen vehicle. During their investigation, they discovered the medals.

Rensselear police worked tirelessly to find the family of Williams.

James VanApeldorn is the second cousin of Williams. VanApeldorn is thankful for the officers for returning the missing medals.

VanApeldorn has plans to eventually donate the medals to the Purple Heart Museum near West Point.
