Assembly passes bill to rename Rotterdam bridge after fallen soldier

Bill to rename bridge after Grassia passes Assembly

Chief Warrant Officer John Grassia III died in a helicopter crash in Texas near the Mexican border last year. The bridge that is located on Becker Road where it crosses over I-88 will be officially named the "Bridge Dedicated to CW2 John M. Grassia III."

The state Assembly has passed a bill to honor a fallen soldier from Rotterdam.

Chief Warrant Officer John Grassia III died in a helicopter crash in Texas near the Mexican border last year.

The bridge is located on Becker Road where it crosses over I-88. That’s near Schalmont High School, where Grassia graduated from. It’s also near the New York State Police Troop G Barracks. This is a reminder of Grassia’s deep ties to the community and his distinguished service as a state trooper.

“John Grassia was more than a decorated soldier and a State Trooper – he was a son of Rotterdam,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, D-Rotterdam. “He grew up here, served his country and community with honor, and gave his life in the line of duty. This bridge will stand as a permanent reminder of his courage, his sacrifice, and the strong connection he had to our hometown.”

CW2 Grassia enlisted in the Army National Guard at age 18, served overseas in Kuwait, and became a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter pilot. He also served as a New York State Trooper in Troop K and Troop G.

He was 30 years old, when his helicopter crashed during a mission in 2023.

“His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Assemblyman Santabarbara added. “This dedication ensures his memory remains rooted in the community he loved.”
