Columbia County man who rode ATV while drunk gets 6 years for burglary

A 36-year-old Columbia County man was sentenced on Wednesday to 6 years in prison for riding an ATV while drunk in effort to get away from police.

It happened on July 9 of last year. Corey Hinz, of Stuyvesant, was wanted by police in connection with several burglaries. Hinz recklessly drove through the area, including across the lawn of a town park where children were participating in a summer program, according to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.

Hinz also was wanted in connection with the theft of three firearms.

State Police and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office searched for him for more than six hours, with the assistance of a helicopter, before he was captured.

Hinz pleaded guilty in January to burglary. He also must serve 2 years of post-release supervision.
