Gov. Hochul outlines $252 billion budget proposal

Public safety, housing and mental health were three big issues when Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled her fiscal year 2026 budget proposal on Tuesday.

The governor figures to cover it all, it will take $252 billion.

Items on Gov. Kathy Hochul wish list include $35 billion to fund Medicaid, and another $35 billion for public education.

There’s also $435 million she wants to invest in resiliency projects to protect communities from natural disasters.

The governor says current economic conditions are rosy and conducive to finance the largest spending plan in state history without raising taxes.

If all goes as planned, the final budget should be in place by April 1.
