May is Blood Pressure and Stroke Education Month, and with over 30% of adults in the Capital Region already diagnosed with high blood pressure, local organizations are making health screenings more accessible.

Broadview Federal Credit Union and the American Heart Association have partnered to launch a free blood pressure kiosk at the Roarke Center in Troy. The new tool, available starting today at 10 a.m., offers visitors a quick and easy way to check their blood pressure—an essential step in identifying and preventing severe health conditions.

High blood pressure, often referred to as “the silent killer,” typically has no symptoms but can lead to stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure if left unchecked. “It’s so important that folks have the knowledge of what their blood pressure is,” said Kathy Lanni, Chief Community Officer at Broadview and a former nurse. “Knowing your numbers can help prevent more serious health issues down the road.”

Located at a community hub that already provides food and support services, the Roarke Center’s kiosk aims to remove barriers to care. If a visitor receives a high reading, staff can help connect them with primary care services for follow-up.

Experts also encourage lifestyle changes to help maintain healthy blood pressure, such as regular physical activity, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, limiting sodium, and getting enough sleep. Lanni also emphasized the importance of understanding and sharing your family’s health history with a doctor.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to bring health resources into the community, making it easier for individuals to monitor their health and seek care before problems become severe.
