The Green Island School District is being recognized for a new learning program it launched in response to challenges due to the pandemic.

The district is being recognized Thursday with the “Champions of Change” award, from the New York State School Boards Association.

It honors the school’s pilot program launched in fall 2020 to improve elementary level reading.

School leaders say it doubled reading proficiency for grades 3-8.

The school says it plans to expand the program to math this school year.
