No vote on bill to delay special election in NY-21
A proposed bill to delay the special election to replace North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik won’t go to a vote after all.
This comes after an uproar over Democrats in the New York State Legislature introducing a bill Friday that would delay the special election for New York’s 21st Congressional District until the election this November.
Under current New York state law, when there’s a vacancy for Congress, the governor has up to 10 days to call for a special election. That election must be held within 70 to 80 days.
However, the proposed legislation from majority Democrats last week would have allowed Gov. Kathy
Hochul to delay scheduling the special election. Republicans responded by proposing a new constitutional amendment that would ensure the current state law to be enshrined into the state constitution.
