Garage fire in Green Island caused by fireworks

Green Island Fire Chief Seney said crews responded to a fire late Friday night inside a garage structure at River’s Edge Apartments.

Fire officials told us the call came in around 11:45 p.m. for a fire near the 500 section of the apartment complex on Riverview Drive.

Upon arrival, Chief Seney said crews discovered a heavy fire with smoke and flames visible in a four-bay garage.

Fire crews said it appeared the fire started in one bay and spread to the other three bays of the garage structure.

The fire was aggressively fought and brought under control in about 15 minutes, said Chief Seney.

At least one bay of the garage is heavily damaged, and the entire building sustained smoke and water damage, said officials.

There were no reports of injuries.

Chief Seney said through investigation, the cause of the fire is being attributed to the premature disposal of fireworks, and that it was accidental.

Mutual aid responded to the fire, including Watervliet Fire, Watervliet Arsenal Fire, and Cohoes Fire.
