Man killed on railroad tracks near Pittsfield supermarket on Wednesday night.

One person is dead in Pittsfield after being struck by a train Wednesday.

It happened at around 6:20 p.m. at the tracks in the area of The Big Y Supermarket on West Street.

Pittsfield Police said two men were observed walking onto the train tracks just east of where the crash occurred and began walking west. When the train approached, the operator saw them and attempted to warn them by blowing the horn.

One of the pedestrians was able to get out of the way, but the second one was struck.

The victim was transported to Berkshire Medical Center, where they later died. His name is being withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.

The second person left before emergency personnel arrived and was not identified.
