Rensselaer County Democrats are reacting to what they call their county executive’s lack of humanity and leadership.

The group said it objects to Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin’s fear-provoking premonition related to asylum seekers and refugees coming to the community.

McLaughlin appeared on Newsmax, calling it “an invasion of this nation” and a “targeted political hit” on GOP counties.

The statement from Democrats on Friday said in part, “Rensselaer County needs leaders who are willing to foster understanding and empathy, rather than fuel division and fear.”

“The GOP uses fear to divide us, to garner votes, and to deflect attention from their own failings.”
