Schenectady man guilty of raping sleeping woman

A Schenectady man has been convicted of raping a woman while she was sleeping, and then fleeing police by climbing onto the roof to get to another apartment.

A jury found Victor Casado, 27, guilty Tuesday on a six-count indictment.

The victim reported the rape to police within two hours of waking up, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office. She was sent to Ellis Hospital and a rape exam was performed, which found evidence of Casado’s DNA.

Police officers went to his apartment to question him. Casado opened the door, and then when they said they wanted to speak with him, he went back inside. He then climbed out the window and onto the roof and fled into a neighboring apartment. Casado left a bag of drugs on the roof including heron and fentanyl, according to police.

After 30 minutes, Casado left his apartment and was arrested.

Casado faces a minimum of 8 years on the rape charge and a maximum of 25 years in prison. He also faces additional charges for criminal possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.
Casado is scheduled to be sentenced on July 23.
