Schenectady sees 40% drop in nonfatal overdoses

Schenectady sees decline in overdoses

Schenectady Police said they have seen a decrease in overdoses because of several initiatives.

The city of Schenectady has seen a 40% reduction in non-fatal overdoses between 2023 and 2024, according to police.

They attribute the decrease to initiatives such as the Schenectady Cares Program, which brings together partners at the Schenectady Police Department, New Choices Recovery Center, Catholic Charities, and the Schenectady County Office of Community Services.

Through this program, a person can walk into the police department and explore treatment options without fear of investigation or arrest.

They also have referred people to its partners at New Choices and Catholic Charities, who work to help people with substance use issues.

The news in Schenectady reflects a statewide trend of a drop in overdoses.
