Shaker High School is being recognized as the best in the state for their efforts in STEM.

Samsung has named 50 schools across the United States as state winners in the Solve for Tomorrow STEM competition. Shaker was selected as the state winner for New York and has been awarded a $12,000 Samsung Technology Prize package.

Shaker is addressing the issue of sleep inertia among young people and its effect on the difficulty of paying attention during the school day.

Students working on the project told NewsChannel 13 they noticed a lot of their peers dealing with a lack of sleep regularly, so they’re trying to come up with a solution to solve this issue.

“It’s just really important for us to see this small little idea we didn’t believe was really important just to become something so much bigger and possibly change schools,” said Gianna Greco, one of the students working on the project.

“The next round is we will be competing against the other 50 states, and there will be 10 national finalists from that,” said David Musser, who is also working on the project.

Shaker’s team will utilize environment-harmonized lighting in educational environments by developing auto-adjusting smart LED lights in school to help students feel more alert and awake.
